Dambulla cave temple also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site (1991) in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country. This site is situated 148 kilometres (92 mi) east of Colombo , 72 kilometres (45 mi) north of Kandy and 43 km (27 mi) north of Matale.

Polonnaruwa

Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings.

Polonnaruwa is 2nd ancient capital of Sri Lanka, which lasted for about 200 years from 1055AD. King “Vijayabahu” was the hero who liberated “Rajarata” from Cholas. After king Vijayabahu, his grand son “Parakramabahu 1”. In his period consider as a golden age of Polonnaruwa. During his region trade and agriculture was popular under his patronage. The great king also constructed and restored many tanks island wide. “Parakrama samudraya” is the largest. After king parakramabahu, king “Nissankamalla 1” become king of polonaruwa. Duration of his rule he renovated many places. The “Galpotha’ (stone book) in polonaruwa was prepared by him. After king Nissankamalla polonaruwa were slightly weak, and in the year 1214AD pirate admiral “Magha” arrived to country from “Kalinga”, he ruled for 25 years..
